feedthebirdie The Backyard Review

An independent editorial guide to backyard bird feeders.

We test feeders so you don't have to. No paid placements, no fluff — just honest scoring, clear recommendations, and writing that respects your time.

Who we are

Welcome to feedthebirdie — a small, independent editorial outfit dedicated to one quiet pleasure: getting more birds into the backyards, balconies, and gardens of the people who care about them. We are a tiny team of birdwatchers, gardeners, and outdoor-living obsessives, and we spend our weekends testing feeders, refilling reservoirs, watching what shows up, and writing it all down honestly.

Whether you are an experienced ornithologist with a yard full of specialist feeders or a first-timer hanging your very first suet cage, this site was built with you in mind. Bird feeders are not just products to us; they are the centrepiece of a small, living ecosystem.

Our mission

Bird feeders are a surprisingly noisy market. Specs are inconsistent, photography is misleading, and the same brand often sells five products that look almost identical. Our job is to cut through it. We help everyday people pick the right feeder for their garden, their budget, and the species they actually want to attract — and we do it without pretending to be neutral about quality.

We want every visitor to leave the site feeling confident about the feeder they chose, knowing it will hold up through the seasons and genuinely serve the birds they love.

Our methodology

Every feeder we cover goes through a structured editorial evaluation. We score each one on five criteria, weighted equally:

  • Build & durability — How does it hold up against rain, wind, and UV?
  • Capacity & refill frequency — Larger reservoirs mean fewer refills.
  • Ease of cleaning — Hygiene matters; we favour feeders that disassemble without a struggle.
  • Bird appeal — Different feeders suit different species; we match feeder type to the birds you actually want.
  • Weather performance — Does the seed stay dry? Does the structure stay put?

We combine hands-on observation, public review patterns, and detailed product research to form our final verdicts. We never recommend a feeder we would not be happy to hang in our own gardens.

Affiliate disclosure

feedthebirdie participates in third-party affiliate programmes. When you click an outbound link on our site and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. These commissions help keep the site running, fund new research, and let us keep publishing free, independent content. Our editorial opinions are never influenced by affiliate relationships — we only recommend feeders we believe genuinely offer value to our readers.
